Program Overview
ECNL Program U11-U18/19:
The Pinnacle of High-Performance Development
- The ECNL platform is United PDX’s highest level of competition, specifically designed for high-performance youth soccer players who aspire to play collegiately. This program provides a professionalized environment with national exposure and elite-level competition.
Pre-ECNL (Foundational Academy: U11-U12)
- Our elite pathway begins at the U11 and U12 age groups. The Pre-ECNL program serve as the dedicated “entry phase” for the national leagues. These teams focus on high-level technical mastery and tactical transitions, ensuring players are fully prepared for the demands of the ECNL platform at U13.

National & Regional Leagues (U11-U18/19)
- Teams participate in the ECNL & RL Far West Conference, competing against the top clubs in the region and attending ECNL National Showcases throughout the year.

College Pathway
- As the club’s top tier, this program is the primary vehicle for player recruitment. Through a rigorous training schedule, national showcase attendance, and a proven developmental curriculum, we provide the platform players need to bridge the gap between youth soccer and the collegiate ranks.

PREMIER PROGRAM U11-U18/19:
The Premier Program is our comprehensive platform for players seeking a higher challenge. This program serves as the primary bridge within the United PDX Academy, offering a high-quality environment for players navigating their unique developmental journeys—whether they are refining their skillset for the next level or seeking a competitive experience with a balanced commitment.
As a cornerstone of our pathway, the Premier Program integrates the best of our regional and state-level play to ensure every player finds their “right fit” for growth.
- Flexible Development: Recognizes that players excel at different paces. This program supports those working toward a higher level of play as well as those who desire a quality competitive environment with more localized travel and commitment.
- League Play & Competition: Teams compete within the OYSA Divisions, participating in fall, winter, and spring leagues. Higher Level Premier teams will have access to play in the newly formed Tier 2 team based Unified National Platform of USYS NL & US Club NPL.
- Tournament Exposure: Groups represent United PDX in local summer tournaments and various regional events throughout the year, ensuring consistent high-level match play.
Who This Program Is For
- Players aspiring to transition into the ECNL platform.
- Athletes with college soccer ambitions seeking regional exposure.
- Players looking for a rigorous, professional training environment that offers more flexibility than the national league travel schedule.
The New Youth Soccer Pathway

The Road to 2026: From “State-Run” to the ECNL Era
To understand where we are going, it is helpful to see how far the American game has shifted:
- 1990s–Mid-2000s (The Golden Era of USYS): For decades, US Youth Soccer (USYS) was the undisputed king. The path to college or the pros was rigid: you played for a local club, won your State Cup, went to regionals (and potentially nationals), and hoped to be identified through the Olympic Development Program (ODP).
- 2007–2010 (The Academy Revolution): US Soccer launched the Development Academy (DA) for boys, mandating a 10-month season and banning high school soccer. In response, forward-thinking clubs launched the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) for girls in 2009, seeking a national schedule without the restrictive rules of the state-office system.
- 2011–2019 (The Rise of ECNL & The Cold War): ECNL Girls quickly became the gold standard for college recruiting. When US Soccer launched a Girls DA in 2017 to compete, it forced clubs to choose sides, splitting talent nationwide. Meanwhile, ECNL Boys launched in 2017, providing a top-tier alternative for clubs that wanted elite play without sacrificing the high school soccer experience.
- 2020–2021 (The Great Collapse): The pandemic acted as a catalyst for a system already under stress. In 2020, US Soccer shuttered the Development Academy entirely. This created a definitive fork in the road: MLS NEXT (Boys) emerged as a specialized professional homegrown pathway, while the ECNL solidified its position as the premier national league—the primary engine for elite college recruitment and a proven springboard to the pros.
- Today (The Unified Pyramid): A historic alignment between USYS, US Club, and US Soccer has finally simplified the pathway into three clear tiers:
New Tier Structure
- Tier 1: National & Regional Platform (ECNL / ECNL-RL / Pre-ECNL)
- Club-Based Competition. The premier national platform for elite competition and the primary engine for college recruitment. Leagues are structured with National Showcase Events and a National Championship Playoff Series.
- Tier 2: The Unified National Platform
- Team-Based Competition. A merger of the USYS National League and US Club National Premier Leagues (NPL), providing high-level regionalized play with a pathway to compete in the ECNL-RL Playoff Series.
- Tier 3: Localized Competitive Play
- Team-Based Competition. State Leagues (USYS – OYSA), tournaments, and programs focusing on localized competition with State Cup options.
Why this matters: United PDX is built to support players at every level with a direct, internal pathway through every tier of this new structure.
